4 Things to Know Before Buying an Electric Bike

Electric bikes are battery-powered bicycles. They’re more powerful than regular bikes and much faster. Electric bikes are very convenient, as you can use them to commute or ride trails with them. So, before you find the right one, here are 4 things to know before buying an electric bike.

  • Electric Bikes Are Worth the Money

Electric bikes cost more than non-electric bikes, but in the long run, it’s not that big of a difference. Depending on e-bike brands, you can find a great electric bike for $3000 – $5000. Electric bikes are much faster than non-electric bikes and are very quiet considering they are battery-powered.

  • Benefits Of Owning an Electric Bike

Owning an electrical bike has many great benefits, like getting anywhere you need much faster and easier. Without much effort, you can ride up to 20mph. Another great thing about e-bikes is that climbing hills will no longer be a problem, which means not arriving somewhere covered in sweat. Electric bikes are also easier on your knees and hips since you don’t have to use so much pressure on the joints.

In addition, electric bikes allow you to have an easier start when you stop, which means going through an intersection much quicker and safer. The last but not least, benefit of the electric bike that prompts everyone to use is having so much fun while riding.

  • Battery Life of An Electric Bike

One of the most important factors to consider is how far can you go on a fully charged battery. You want to make sure you can go to your destination without any problems. Relaxed pedalling can take you 22-50 miles on a single charge. Sometimes, you can go even further, it all depends on the hills, wind, and your weight. You can prolong your battery by using pedals downhill or on level surfaces.

A lithium-ion battery will take about 3.5 to 6 hours to fully charge. The last hour of charging is used to ‘’top off’ the cells, so you don’t have to wait every time for it to finish.

A lithium-ion battery has a minimum of 500 full charge cycles. In addition, some batteries can have up to 1200 charge cycles. Keep in mind that 50% charged battery counts as half of one charge cycle. However, most riders combine both pedal and electric power, which means going up to 10,000-30,000 miles before having to replace a battery.

  • Servicing An Electric Bike

The electric bike consists of two group parts – electric and mechanical.

Mechanical group parts are the same parts you would find on regular bicycles. So, repairing mechanical parts can be done in any bike shop. However, some basic maintenance you can do yourself, like lubricating the chain or keeping the tires inflated. You can find many tips online on how to take basic care of your bike.

On the other hand, there are electrical parts. The good thing about electrical parts is that they don’t require any maintenance. But if you notice some problems with electrical parts, you should visit an expert shop in servicing electric bikes. However, make sure to keep some charge in the battery, because sometimes if it discharges all the way, it may not charge anymore.

So, these are the 4 most important things to know before buying an electric bike. You can ride an e-bike anywhere you want, get on time, and have fun while riding it. Before making a purchase, test ride several different models, especially uphill, to see which one suits you the best and to get a sense of what you can expect.
