Choose the right dog food

Good nutrition is needed for the healthy development of a dog. A dog can stay active throughout its life only when it gets enough energy from the food it eats. There are many types of dog food, and people choose dry and canned food because it is convenient and affordable. Many dog owners are switching to raw dog food because it has more proteins and fewer preservatives. It is easier to digest, and the nutrients are absorbed more efficiently. A natural raw diet helps to reduce allergy symptoms and keeps the dog healthy. Dogs get more energy because energy is not wasted in digesting carbohydrates and sugars.

Dog food is not available in as many flavours as human food. There are a few varieties, and it is best to choose one that meets all the nutritional needs of the dog.

Types of dog food

Dry/Kibble

Kibble is the most economical dog food, and most dog owners buy it for their dogs. It is crunchy and comes in various sizes, shapes, and flavours. It doesn’t need refrigeration and lasts for a long time. Dry food doesn’t require any preparation, and it is easier to portion out appropriate amounts to puppies and dogs. It keeps the dog’s teeth healthy because chewing dry food reduces the buildup of tartar.

Canned

Canned dog food is wet food, and it has a long shelf life. It is readily available in the stores, but it is expensive. Dogs prefer canned food to dry food. Canned food has an unpleasant odour and is more expensive than dry food. It has higher water content and a reduced amount of nutrients.

Semi-moist

Semi-moist dog food comes in the form of meaty foods like pork chops and burgers. It has very few nutrients, more artificial flavours and colours, added sugars and higher salt content. It can only be given as an occasional treat and not regular food.

Home-cooked

Dog owners who want to have complete control over their dog’s diet prefer giving it home-cooked food. They want to ensure that the nutritional needs of their dogs are met. It is expensive and time-consuming to cook food for a dog, and the person preparing it should be well acquainted with canine nutrition.

Raw

Raw food for dogs consists of raw meat and uncooked bones. Uncooked bones are a natural source of calcium and phosphorus. Dogs find it easy to consume and digest raw food. It is best to give the dog raw meat with less fat content.

Benefits of raw dog food

Easily digestible: It has lesser synthetic vitamins and is digested quickly by the dogs. It is low in sugars and carbohydrates and has no additives, fillers or preservatives.

Healthy skin and coat: Raw dog food contains active enzymes that help the dog absorb starches, protein and fats. It gives the dog smooth, furry and dandruff free skin.

Less doggy odour: The unpleasant odour is caused by eating food with additives and preservatives. The dog’s digestive system supports raw food and produces less foul-smelling gas.

Reduction in allergies: The preservatives in kibble, canned food and semi-moist food can cause rashes, ear infections, itchy paws and joint problems. Raw food eliminates all allergy symptoms.

Strong immune system: Raw meat, fruits and vegetables provide the necessary vitamins and minerals to the dog. It is also rich in antioxidants, micronutrients and enzymes that strengthen the immune system.

Choosing raw dog food for the dog is the first step in promoting long and healthy life. Dogs look good and feel more energized by eating raw food. It becomes more active, doesn’t gain extra weight, and lives a healthy life.
