After medical and engineering programmes, law courses are quite popular in India. For seeking admission in the UG and PG law programmes, students need to clear the entrance examinations first. Different state and national level entrance examinations are available for those who want to study BSc LLB, BA LLB, LLM, courses in India. Many universities and colleges give admission to students on the basis of their performance in the entrance test. The most popular and top law examinations in India are given below:
CLAT ( Common Law Admission Test), conducted by NLUs (National Law Universities), is perhaps the most popular law entrance test in India. There is no age limit for the candidates who wish to appear for this examination but they must have completed their 10+2 studies with a minimum of 45% marks to seek admission in UG courses. For PG courses, they must complete a 3- or 5-year LLB course with at least 50% marks. Around 60k students appear for this test every year, which is usually held in the first week of January. It is an offline examination in which 150 questions are asked. Comprehension-based questions are asked in this examination.
Law School Admission Test ( LSAT) is another national level entrance test with which students can seek admission for studying LLB, LLM, and other law courses. It is an online examination that is conducted twice every year in January and June. It is conducted by Pearson VUE and candidates need to complete their graduation with at least 45% marks to apply for this examination. No age limit is prescribed for the candidates who are willing to give this test. The questions are based on logical reasoning and English comprehension.
- MH CET LAW
MH CET LAW is among the top law examinations in the country. It is a state-level examination conducted by the DHE Maharashtra. It offers admission to the 3- and 5-year LLB courses. After clearing this entrance test, students can seek admission for studying LLB courses in any law college in the Maharashtra state. It is an objective-type test that is held online. For the 5-year LLB, course, students need to complete their bachelor-level studies in any discipline. For the 3-year LLB course, students need to complete 12th Class or any equivalent course from a recognised college or university. A minimum of 45% marks is required for general category students whereas students belonging to SC and ST reserved categories must have at least 40% marks.
AILET (All India Law Entrance Test) is one of the top law examinations in India. It is conducted by NLU Delhi and offers admission to the LLM and BA LLB programmes. It is an offline examination that is held every year and consists of only objective-type questions for the LLB course. However, the entrance examination for the LLM course includes both descriptive and MCQs. A 0.25 mark is deducted for every wrong answer and the duration of this examination is 90 minutes. The candidates need to clear their 10+2 examination with a minimum of 45% marks if they belong to the general category. Candidates who belong to the SC and ST categories must score at least 40% to qualify for the BA LLB programme. To qualify for the LLM programme, students of SC and ST categories must score at least 45% marks whereas general category students must score a minimum of 50% marks.
Symbiosis Law Admission Test (SLAT) is an entrance test that help candidates to secure admission into any college of Symbiosis International University. The law colleges of Symbiosis are one of the most prestigious law colleges in the country. Therefore, SLAT is one of the top law examinations in India. It is an objective-based test that is held online in May every year. Students belonging to the general category and SC/ST categories must secure at least 50% and 45% marks, respectively, to qualify in this examination. Questions are asked on GK, analytical reasoning, logical reasoning, and reading comprehension.
