Firstly, why is it important to be more eco-friendly?
Well, the planet is our home; it produces the things we need to stay alive, and it’s where future generations will build their lives. The planet is quite literally our whole world, and some people seem to lose sight of this. It should be everyone’s goal to live a more eco-friendly life, otherwise, the survival of the human race is threatened. Putting selfish views aside, the planet is also where your grandchildren and their grandchildren will grow up. It’s important to preserve the planet so they have a chance to see the same beautiful nature that we do. A scientific study in 2016 discovered that half of our 825 natural ecosystems were still at risk of being destroyed. On top of preserving our planet, we should strive to be eco-friendly to improve our health. By being more eco-friendly and putting fewer pollutants into the atmosphere, you’re creating cleaner air for you to breathe in. Cleaner air promotes a better quality of life and increases your life span.
Is being more eco-friendly expensive?
No, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Using techniques to be more eco-friendly can be cheaper than the less green alternative. For example, you can bulk-buy food items without using plastic packaging, which is cheaper in the long run and more sustainable. Businesses also sometimes offer rewards to customers that choose to be more eco-friendly, such as 25p off your morning coffee if you bring a reusable coffee cup. Being more eco-friendly is as simple as using metal water bottles instead of plastic ones or picking up rubbish you see on the floor. However, if you’re stuck for ideas, we have some tips on what you can do to be more eco-friendly.
Use A Stainless Steel Water Bottle
This tip may seem very simple, but some people are still using plastic water bottles in 2023! We know it can be easier just to grab a bottle of water while you’re out, but once you get into the habit of bringing a metal water bottle along with you, it will become second nature. This is a very simple way of saving the planet, and you’ll also be saving money. On top of this, stainless steel water bottles are actually better for your health. As stainless steel is naturally sterile, it’s more difficult for bacteria to grow on the inside of your water bottle. Another benefit is that your drinks can stay hot or cold for longer; there’s nothing like a sip of ice-cold water on a hot day!
Use A Reusable Coffee Cup
We’ve mentioned this previously, but millions of single-use coffee cups end up in landfills each year. This is easily avoided by using reusable coffee cups. You can still enjoy the taste of your favourite coffee shop drink, but now you’ll be doing so in a more eco-friendly manner. Your coffee will also stay hot for longer, so no more lukewarm coffee if you decide to come back to it later.
Use Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products
Mainstream cleaning products contain a lot of harsh chemicals and toxins; these end up in rivers and streams. Once they’re in ecosystems, they can alter the growth of nature and ultimately change our landscapes. You can easily escape this by using eco-friendly cleaning products to clean your home. There are plenty of options available in ordinary supermarkets, or you can make your own using recipes online.
Draught Proofing Your Home
Insulating your windows properly and sealing up any gaps that cause cold draughts are great ways to be more eco-friendly. It’s natural that when you’re home is colder, you’ll turn up the heating, however, this also uses more energy. Using less energy is more sustainable unless you have renewable energy sources, so we recommend sealing up any gaps to ensure your heat stays inside your home.
There are many simple ways you can be more eco-friendly. Most of these tips are also mutually beneficial to you as they will either save you money or increase your well-being. We recommend surveying what you can do to make your life a little bit more sustainable, it doesn’t have to be drastic changes, but everyone should do their bit!
