Intro: comic book movies are all the rage these days and with good reason. Between Marvel and D.C., there’s a vast universe of unique characters to enjoy on the big screen. While the heroes always take center stage, that doesn’t mean the supporting cast can’t be just as entertaining. Here are ten fantastic support characters in the Marvel/D.C. universe that deserve some recognition. Who knows? Maybe one of them will make an appearance in a future movie! 1.    Loki:

Loki spent most of his screen time switching between the villain, main villain, and anti-hero. His motives were always clear, even if his methods were questionable at times. Thor’s adoptive brother and frequent antagonist, Loki, is a powerful sorcerer and skilled manipulator. He’s also one of the most popular Marvel characters, thanks in part to his charming performance by Tom Hiddleston. The God of Mischief himself, Loki, is one of the most beloved villains in the Marvel universe. He first appeared in 2011’s Thor as the adoptive brother of the titular character and has since gone on to star in two more movies (The Avengers and Thor: The Dark World) and a T.V. show (Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). He’s cunning, charming, and always gets the last laugh – even if it’s at his own expense.

2.    Harley Quinn:

A fan favorite from the D.C. universe, Harley Quinn is a psychotic supervillain and former girlfriend of The Joker. She was created by Paul Dini and first appeared in 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series. Margot Robbie will be playing the character in the upcoming movie Suicide Squad, which will be released in 2016. First appearing in 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn has become one of the most popular characters in the D.C. universe. Initially a psychiatrist working at Arkham Asylum, she was seduced by the Joker and eventually became his sidekick and lover. 3.    Alfred Pennyworth:

Alfred Pennyworth is one of the essential characters in the Batman universe, serving as Batman’s loyal butler and father figure. While he may not have any superpowers, Alfred is always there to help Batman out when he needs it- providing crucial information or just giving him a much-needed hug. Alfred is the butler and confidante of Bruce Wayne, aka Batman. He’s been by Bruce’s side since the young man’s parents were killed, and he’s always been there to offer sage advice and support. He’s also an expert combatant and marksman, making him a valuable ally in the fight against crime.

4.    Groot:

Groot is a giant tree-like creature who first appeared in the Marvel comics in 1960. While he may not have much dialogue, Groot is always there to help his friends when they need it. He’s got some serious strength and resilience, making him a valuable team member. He’s also got a heart of gold, evident in his selfless sacrifice at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy. This gentle giant first appeared in 1960’s Tales to Astonish #13 and has been a mainstay of the Marvel universe ever since. While he may not have much in the way of intelligence, Groot is a mighty being with a heart of gold.

5.    Pepper Potts:

This longtime love interest of Iron Man has been by his side since the beginning and is one of the most valuable members of his team. She’s a brilliant scientist in her own right and has helped Tony Stark build some of his most impressive armors. She’s also got a backbone of steel, standing up to Tony and the other Avengers when they need it. She’s fiercely loyal to Tony and is always there to help him out, whether he wants it. She also proves herself to be a formidable opponent, as seen in Iron Man 3 when she takes the Mandarin’s forces head-on.

6.    Shuri:

As the younger sister of T’Challa, Shuri is the princess of Wakanda and a mighty warrior in her own right. She’s an expert martial artist and has a suit of armor as technologically advanced as her brother’s. She’s also a gifted scientist, responsible for creating many of the gadgets and vehicles used by the Black Panther. The younger sister of T’Challa, Shuri, is the princess of Wakanda and the Black Panther’s chief scientist. She’s responsible for creating many of the advanced technologies that Wakanda is known for, including the vibranium suit that T’Challa wears as the Black Panther.

7.    Heimdall:

The all-seeing, all-hearing Asgardian sentry who guards the Bifrost Bridge. One of the few beings in the Marvel universe with the power to see and hear everything, Heimdall is the guardian of Asgard and a powerful ally of Thor. He can travel between dimensions, making him invaluable when it comes to defending Asgard from danger. Heimdall is one of the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe, capable of taking on entire armies by himself. He’s also a master swordsman, making him a formidable opponent in close combat.
