Contrition is more than just apologizing. It’s often an important part of a process, the most famous aspect of which is confession.

Traditionally, the Act of Contrition is said right after the actual confession, but some other variations are acceptable. It’s also worth noting that the Act of Contrition is not exclusive to confession.

Requirements for the Act

Though Contrition can be performed at any time, there are a few conditions that need to be met when performing it. The first of these is to actually feel sorrow and seek forgiveness for your sins.

As with non-spiritual interactions, apologizing to people just to avoid unpleasant situations isn’t going to work for contrition.

The next step is to renounce your sins. This is very similar to the first step, but it means that if you were given the chance to repeat your actions, you wouldn’t.

The last step is to strive to live a good life moving forward. This isn’t an easy step, but the goal is to do your best, not to be perfect.

Prayer of Contrition

Part of the Act of Contrition involves reciting a specific prayer, or one form of a specific prayer. There are agreed to be three.

There’s a traditional form that is likely the one your great grandparents might have said. Their parents and grandparents may have, as well.

There is also a shortened version based on the traditional one, and a modern version that has been reworded for use by the current generations. The Catholic church also has a Latin version of the prayer, but this isn’t likely to come up unless you’re a member of the clergy.

There are also more localized variants practiced in different countries. Among the countries with their own variants are Nigeria and Ireland.
